OpenAI: The Computer Did My Homework

OpenAI's ChatGPT is a large, pre-trained language model that can generate human-like text. It has been trained on a vast amount of internet text data. It can be fine-tuned on specific tasks such as language translation, question answering, and conversational response generation. It can also generate text on a wide range of topics, making it a versatile tool for natural language processing applications. Open ChatGPT is open source it can be used and trained by anyone.

This means that AI has advanced to the point where it can write much better than many people. In fact, much (OK, almost all) of this blog was written by OpenAI.

This tool can be used for good:

  • Automatic Essay Scoring: ChatGPT can be trained to grade essays based on certain criteria, such as grammar, coherence, and content. This can save teachers time and allow them to focus on providing feedback on specific areas that need improvement.
  • Content Generation: ChatGPT can be used to generate educational content, such as lesson plans, study guides, and quizzes. This can help teachers who are struggling to come up with ideas for their classes or who want to supplement their existing materials.
  • Language Translation: ChatGPT can be used to translate educational content from one language to another. This can be useful for students who are not fluent in the language of instruction, or for teachers who want to make their materials more widely accessible.
  • Tutoring: ChatGPT can be used as an AI tutor that can answer student's questions and provide explanations.
  • Personalization: ChatGPT can generate personalized study plan, quiz and provide personalized feedback and explanation. This can help students learn at their own pace and in a way that is tailored to their individual needs.

Or not so good:

  • Cheating: ChatGPT can be used by students to generate answers to homework assignments or to write essays. This could be problematic as it would undermine the integrity of the educational process and could lead to students receiving grades they did not earn.
  • Disseminating misinformation: ChatGPT can be trained on inaccurate or biased data, which could lead to the generation of inaccurate or biased educational content. This could be particularly problematic in subjects such as history or science, where accuracy is crucial.
  • It is difficult to catch a student using ChatGPT to write a paper because the model is able to produce text that is very similar to that written by a human. Additionally, the model can be fine-tuned on specific texts and topics, making the output even more difficult to distinguish from human-written text. Additionally, the output from GPT can be paraphrased, which makes it harder to detect plagiarism.

ChatGPT has been released and its capabilities cannot be undone. As educators, we may need to reconsider the types of tasks and assignments we assign to students in light of this technology.
