Opportunities for PD and Academy Hours

 

Professional staff currently need to complete 30 hours of academy time. Here are a few options for you.

  • One Hour Technology Academies - After watching a series of short videos you will be asked to submit an artifact that demonstrates your learning. Each completed module is worth one Academy/Act 48 hour. Please email Michael Pauling at paulingm@slsd.org or Joseph Breisch at breischj@slsd.org to join this Canvas course.
  • Kyte Learning  - Kyte learning is a video-based professional developmental platform that offers a large selection of professional development courses. Each course will indicate the number of credit hours awarded for the completion of the course.  Completed courses will be awarded as Academy hours.

Wordle Type Brain Breaks

These puzzles allow teachers and students to take a quick break while still exercising their minds Wordle - The word game that started it all Quordle - When one puzzle is not enough, you can do four at the same time. Crosswordle - This one allows you to create (click the gear) and share simple custom puzzles  Worldle  - My Favorite - This game shows you a silhouette of a country and you need to name it using directional clues. This works great when paired with printed atlases.  Nerdle - Find the Math equation Numbele  - Find the Math equation Histordle - After you receive 3 history clues, can you find the year?  Lordle of the Rings - OK sorry this one is only for J.R.R. Tolkien fans. Yes, there is even a Star Wars one. Heardle - Warning: This one might not always be school appropriate. How good are you at recognizing songs and artists?

Spotlight on Strategies

SOS Spotlight on Strategies   What is an SOS? "Spotlight on Strategies are creative, research-based instructional strategies, created by teachers for teachers." If you log in to Discovery Education (Using Classlink ) you will be able to find a large number of Instructional Strategies by searching "SOS".  Here is one example - Table Top Texting - Students receive a blank piece of paper and use it to create a text thread with other students.  A student starts by asking a question and then the next student responds. I observed one ELA teacher using this strategy by having the first student write something as a text message and the second student "translated" it into a grammatically correct sentence.  Table Top Texting  works well with the whole class or partners.  Discovery does a good job of providing instructions for each strategy.
